If you use Cash App, you may have seen the headlines: $15 million in settlement money is being paid out this month. Some posts make it sound like everyone gets a $2,500 check. The reality is more complicated — and if you're expecting money, there are a few things you need to know, including a deadline that already passed.
Here's the plain-English breakdown of the Cash App data security settlement.
What happened?
The story starts with two data security incidents at Cash App:
- December 2021: a former employee of Cash App Investing downloaded reports containing customer information without authorization — affecting about 8.2 million Cash App Investing customers. Block disclosed this in April 2022.
- 2023: unauthorized access to some Cash App accounts through recycled phone numbers linked to those accounts. Disclosed in September 2023.
A class-action lawsuit followed, alleging that Block, Inc. (Cash App's parent company) and Cash App Investing were negligent, misrepresented their security practices, and failed to properly handle unauthorized transactions and customer complaints.
Block denied any wrongdoing. The $15 million settlement resolves the dispute without an admission of liability — a standard outcome in class actions. A federal court (U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California) granted final approval on March 27, 2025.
Who was eligible?
The settlement covered current or former customers of Cash App and/or Cash App Investing who, between August 23, 2018 and August 20, 2024:
- Had personal information or an account accessed without authorization, or
- Experienced unauthorized or fraudulent withdrawals or transfers, or
- Had qualifying problems with how Cash App resolved an account error.
Here's the critical part: simply having a Cash App account was not enough. You needed to have been affected and to have filed a valid claim by the November 18, 2024 deadline. That deadline has passed — no new claims are being accepted.
How much do people actually get?
This is where headlines mislead. $2,500 is the cap, not a flat payment. Here's how the money breaks down:
| Category | Maximum |
|---|---|
| Documented out-of-pocket losses | Up to $2,500 |
| Lost time resolving issues | Up to $75 (3 hours × $25/hr) |
| Transaction losses | Documented, unreimbursed losses |
Out-of-pocket losses needed third-party documentation — bank statements, receipts, and similar proof. And the actual payout depends on how many valid claims were filed. With roughly 668,000 claims and about $8.48 million remaining after legal fees and administration costs, the math works out to roughly $12–13 per claim if split evenly — though real distributions follow the settlement's pro-rata formula, not an even split.
Bottom line: most people will receive far less than $2,500. Anyone promising you a guaranteed $2,500 check is misleading you.
When and how are payments sent?
According to the settlement administrator, payments to approved claimants are being issued in October 2026 — some reports indicate distribution began around October 6. Payments go out digitally or by mailed check, depending on the preference selected on the original claim form.
Two practical notes:
- Mailed checks expire in 90 days if not cashed. If you filed a claim, watch your mailbox.
- For questions about an existing claim, the administrator's line is 1-866-615-9740.
Watch out for settlement scams
Big payouts attract scammers. With settlement news trending, expect a wave of fraud attempts. Protect yourself:
- The claim deadline passed. Anyone offering to "help you file" now is running a scam.
- Never pay to receive a settlement. Real administrators don't charge fees to release your payment.
- Don't click links in unexpected texts or emails about the settlement — go to the official settlement website directly.
- No one will call asking for your Cash App PIN or login to "verify" your payment.
Is there any other money coming?
Possibly. Separately, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) ordered an additional restitution fund of $75–120 million for users affected by customer-service problems and inadequate fraud investigations at Cash App. For that fund, no application is needed — compensation is sent automatically to eligible users.
The takeaway checklist
- $15M settlement, final approval March 27, 2025; Block denied wrongdoing.
- Payments to approved claimants going out in October 2026.
- $2,500 is a cap, not a guaranteed check — most payouts will be far smaller.
- Claim deadline (Nov 18, 2024) has passed — no new claims accepted.
- Mailed checks expire in 90 days — cash them promptly.
- Settlement scams are surging — never pay fees or share your PIN.
- A separate CFPB fund ($75–120M) may pay eligible users automatically.
Data breaches are, unfortunately, routine now. What matters is what happens after — and in this case, after years of litigation, the checks are finally in the mail. Just make sure yours doesn't come from a scammer.
